It is Children’s Book Week so nothing better than a review of a new children’s book from a librarian mom like myself. I might have a slight addiction to children’s books that have anything to do with the ocean. I live in Florida and have lived on the coast in the past for several years so I love reading to my girls about the amazing things that can be found under the sea.
Shimmer & Splash: The Sparkling World of Sea Life
Sterling Children’s Books
ISBN: 1-4027-8623-9
Age range: from 6 to 10
40 pages
Over 200 marine species are beautifully illustrated and accompanied by
fascinating descriptions and facts such as size, weight, length, and
where you can find these
sea-dwellers.
This book does have amazing pictures and each page is full of so many fun facts. I know that Big Sis is only 4.5 years old which is younger than its intended audience but she didn’t care and she easily followed along while I read it aloud to her. She was constantly asking questions and I got excited that she was asking questions. I also like that the book is written as a narrative by the author and not written like a textbook or encyclopedia.
Arnosky’s award-winning nature books delight children, parents, and teachers alike? and
Shimmer & Splash captures the endless variety of spectacular
aquatic creatures, which include stingrays, dolphins, blue marlins,
man-o-war, swordfish, a green moray eel, manatee, and a great white
shark, along with many true-to-life size illustrations
of fish and the teeth of a variety of sharks.
Just look at this picture of the author. He looks like my kind of guy! I want him to take me fishing!

This book is perfect for the marine-biologist-in-training or anyone who is fascinated by all creatures of the sea. Complete with seven fantastic gatefolds. The book is easily one of the best comprehensive books about ocean life that can be found near the shore that I have read for children. I enjoy reading every page and I know Big Sis enjoys listening too because she is constantly asking me to read it over and over again. I smile and start back at the beginning of the book for the billionth time today.
