Lately I have been seeing all these super cute chalkboard photo frame pictures popping up on Pinterest and in my news feed on Facebook. Every time I see one I think to myself, these are adorable and I totally want one. I have checked out prices for these bad boys and they start at about 12 bucks on etsy and go all the way up and over the 100 dollar price point. I started to think there must be an easier, and less expensive way to get my hands on one of these. Well…there is. I made my own chalkboard photo frame, and all said and done it cost me less than 5 bucks!!!
What you need:
- Picture frame in your choice of size and design, I went with an 8 x 10. I bought mine at the Dollar Tree, for a $1!
- A can of Rust-Oleum Chalkboard spray paint. I found this at Walmart for $3.98
- Something to lay your frame on while you spray it, I just used plastic Walmart bags.
- Chalk, I had some on hand so it didn’t cost me anything, but I bet you could pick some up at the Dollar Tree.
- If you don’t care for the black frame you could spice it up with some color by painting it.
How to do it:
-
Remove the glass from the picture frame and lay it on your drop cloth, or plastic bags.
-
Apply 2 coats of the Chalkboard spray paint to the glass. Do this in a well ventilated area, preferably outside. Allow about 2 mins of dry time in between coats. You will be able to tell when its semi-dry because it goes from shiny to matte.
-
Allow the glass to dry for up to 24 hours and then prep the frame. You can do this by running the side a piece of chalk over the glass and then just erasing the chalk.
-
Put the glass back into the frame and you should be good to go.
