Reading is a part of my girls lives every single day. At the very least there is one book before bed but usually there are several before bed plus reading throughout the day. I want my girls to be lifelong readers like I am so I try to read to them as much as possible. Of course they enjoy the book much more if it is about something they enjoy. Kids always love pirates so this week we have read The Pirate Train by Nicole Plyler Fisk (with Jack Fisk) and illustrated by Chad Vivas several times and it is a fun book we all enjoy.
The Pirate Train tells the story of the Yo-Ho-Matey family whose youngest son upsets their pirating plans (he gets seasick), and they have to re-imagine their life as a result. In the first book, the Yo-Ho-Matey family buys their train and travels to Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas to dig for treasure, but each book features a new adventure that further develops the characters and highlights fun destinations for treasure-seekers.
Here is a read-aloud version the author’s husband posted on YouTube for your kids to enjoy!
This pirate family loves their life on the high seas but one day Pirate Bro discovers he has terrible seasickness that just won’t go away. As a family they decide to find a new mode of transportation for their adventures. This book has awesome, colorful pictures alongside a fun family adventure. They even find themselves some diamonds to add to their bounty in their new traveling home. This book is a fun pirate adventure and a great reminder that family is much more than a ship or a location.
