The holidays are in full swing and people are traveling all across the country to visit family and friends. We took a road trip to Wisconsin’s North Woods to visit my sister in law and her family a few weeks ago and we’ll be planning another trip soon. It’s such a gorgeous, scenic drive and every time we take a road trip there, it makes me love the beautiful state of Wisconsin even more!
Half the trip is freeway and the other half is scenic country roads. There are so many interesting things to see so I had my husband taking photos along the way, so that I could share with you.
But traveling isn’t all about fun and sight seeing; first you’ve got to make sure you can get to your destination safely, in one piece. You wouldn’t want parts on the car to start breaking or Heaven forbid, get in an accident on your way. Together with Jiffy Lube, I’ve made a list of holiday road trip travel tips to help you plan for your travels this season.
- Let it Flow: Check the levels of all vital fluids, including motor oil, coolant, transmission fluid and windshield wiper fluid, and top-off, or change fluids, as needed. Motor oil does more than just lubricate moving parts. In colder temperatures, it keeps the engine from freezing, too.
- Maintain a Clear View: Make sure your headlights, taillights, turn signals, parking lights and license plate lights are all working properly. Replace any bulbs that may have burned out and consider getting lights cleaned to remove haze and clarify the lenses for better visibility during night driving.
- Stay Charged: A weak battery is unreliable and may take longer to start on cold mornings. Have the battery tested before long road trips to make sure it has enough cranking power to withstand the cold. To minimize strain, start the vehicle with the heater, lights and window defrosters turned off.
- Preventative Maintenance: Make sure to do any preventative maintenance to your vehicle before you leave. This can include anything from replacing any worn our tires to changing your windshield wipers. Just make sure everything is working properly.
- Know where you’re going: You never know if your GPS could malfunction or in our case, we forgot the cord. It’s always a good idea to map out your trip and print a copy to bring with you, just in case.
- Be well rested: Road trips can be tiring so make sure you’ve gotten enough rest before you leave. Driving while drowsy can be dangerous! Stop at a gas station or rest area to stretch or rest if you feel the need at any time.
- Watch your mirrors: I can’t stress this enough. You may be an awesome driver, but the guy behind you might not be as good. Keep an eye on your mirrors so you know who and what is around you at all times. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve avoided an accident by keeping a close eye on what’s going on behind and to the side of me.
