Last week I shared a post about Gunner and how we’re trying to help an old dog remember his old tricks?and how we started feeding him Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind Dog Food in the hopes that it would help increase his cognitive awareness. He’s been on his new food regimen for about a month or so now and we’re starting to notice change, especially in his play. So being the somewhat craft mom that I am, I thought it would be fun to make him a new toy, out of his favorite thing to chew on – socks!
Now I don’t know what it is with this dog and socks but he’s had a major thing for them since he was a pup; usually my husband’s gross and sweaty work socks. Well he couldn’t?pay me enough to touch those nasty things so I used my mismatched socks instead and I’ll show you just how to make this super easy DIY dog toy at the end of this post.
Alright, so something funny happened while I was shooting photos for this post. This dog just does the silliest of things, I can’t even make this stuff up. The light inside was terrible that day so I’ve got Gunner and the food on the porch. I go to grab his bowls?and some water for the perfectly planned photo and I come back outside to the following photo.
I mean, I swear the dude wasn’t hungry. He’d just eaten a few hours before. But I guess he loves his Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind Dog food that much, that he’s gotta be a sneaky little turd about it. I guess I couldn’t have planned it better myself because the photo really sums it all up. Gunner loves his food and is totally aware of it. That’s a good thing because they say a dog’s brain begins to change at age 7, affecting his memory, learning, awareness or decision making. Thanks to Purina Pro Plan discovering a way to promote mental sharpness through their Bright Mind food line, this old boy isn’t giving up yet!
There are enhanced botanical oils in Purina Pro Plan that are shown to promote alertness and memory in dogs ages 7 and up, when they’re considered seniors. After feeding senior dogs Purina Pro Plan, pet parents may notice differences in their dog when it comes to interest in play dog/pet parent interaction and their ability to adapt and cope with change.?If you Spend $10 on any Purina Pro Plan Dry Dog or Cat Food at PetSmart between 8/31 and 10/4, you can save $10 on your next Purina Pro Plan Dry Food purchase, 14-lb. or more, on or before 11/1.
It’s really great to have the old Gunner back in a sense – the dog he was before he got old. He loves his toys again and he rolls around on the floor with them, just like he used to as a ?pup. It’s totally a “proud mama” moment and it takes me back to his puppy days.
I bet your dog would like this DIY Dog Toy made from old socks so I’m going to show you how. You’re not going to believe how easy it is to make! You’re going to need the following supplies:
- old socks, clean – I used 4 because it became really bulky when I tried to add more.
- scissors
Now you’re just going to grab the scissors and cut the toe area right off each sock.
Next, lay one sock cross ways over the other, then tie it around the other.
Follow the previous step with two more socks, one at a time and voila – fun DIY toy for the dogs that didn’t cost a thing but your mismatched socks!
What’s your dog’s favorite thing to play with?
What cute photos! I think it is important to feed pets high quality foods and also provide fun toys. This is a great idea to use old clean socks for.
My dog loves his bones and chews and plays with them for hours. He also likes to play with his stuffed animals, tennis balls a lot! This looks like a very healthy brand of dog food for my dog. He is 8 now and could use it!
Like your Gunner, our last dog had a thing for socks. Once when my spouse was traveling, Dusty went upstairs and pulled a couple of his socks out of the hamper, brought them back downstairs, then laid down with the dirty socks between his paws. It was the one time I couldn’t get mad at him for stealing socks; it was just so sweet and sad. I miss old Dusty. (Fortunately, our new dog, Otis, doesn’t chew up anything but his toys!)
Great pictures. My dogs would love this toy. For some reason I have a lot of socks that don’t have mates, the dryer must have ate them, and now I know what to do with them. Thanks!
This looks like a very cute DIY dog toy, much less expensive than buying dog toys at the store.
My dog loves fabric and would love to play with this DIY dog toy! Great idea!
I’ve used the old sock in the freezer trick, but I like this twist for a fun DIY dog toy. I’m glad Gunner is enjoying his new food so much, too! #client
That is such a great idea. I have a friend, and her dog is obsessed with socks. Love it!
This is such a creative toy, I will have to give this a try for my dog’s
We used to always use old socks to make dog toys. They seemed to love them much more than store-bought!
I love the photos. Animals (like kids) are so funny. I set up the perfect photo opportunity with my girls and it NEVER works.
