Hunger is a serious issue, right here in America. 1 in 6 people across the country do not know where their next meal is coming from at some point throughout the year and sadly, this time of year is even worse for some, as it’s commonly known as the “spring hunger gap”. Food supply at food banks is usually at its lowest since there is a decline in donations to many food banks during the first quarter of the year. Thankfully, there are ways that we can all help, just by purchasing products that we normally would.
From April 6 through May 3, you can help fight hunger when you shop at Walmart. There are 3 ways that you can help and really make a difference.
1. Shop – There are 240 participating products that you can purchase to help provide meals for he hungry. These donations will be generated by the supplier and for each participating item purchased, one meal will be secured through the local Feeding America food bank tied to that specific store. My store even had a display near the main grocery entrance so it was easy for me to find and grab some participating products. Some products will even have the Fight Hunger. Spark Change logo on them so they’ll be easily recognizable.
2. Donate – You can make monetary donations right at the register when you check out.
3. Share a Photo – Take a photos with 6 of your family or friends and upload it to Twitter, Instagram or Facebook with #WeSparkChange to show that you are committed to fight hunger in America. The 6 people represent the 1 in 6 people who may be hungry and it’s a great way to raise awareness. Walmart will donate $10 to Feeding America for each post connected to these social channels, up to $1.5 million. This is in addition to a $1.5 million donation that Walmart initially donated, so you could help them to donate a total of $3 million! You can share multiple photos and don’t forget to tag your friends to challenge them to do the same.
Every little bit helps, so the next time that you’re shopping at Walmart, look for participating products from Campbell’s, ConAgra Foods, General Mills, Kellogg’s, Kraft and Unilever. Grab the things you want or need and help fight hunger in the process. If we all join together, we can make a huge impact and maybe one day soon, our neighbors won’t have to feel hunger pangs.
