The new year signals a whole new beginning including reading some all new books! Here are 8 Picture Books For The New Year!
Ella and Penguin: A Perfect Match by Megan Maynor and illustrated by Rosalinde Bonnet is a cute follow-up to Ella and Penguin Stick Together! Ella and Penguin are best friends. So it only makes sense that they like all the same things. But Ella loves tutus. Penguin does not. Ella loves finger painting. Penguin does not. Oh no! They don?t match! They must not be friends after all. Then again, maybe Ella and Penguin don?t need to like all the same things to love being friends.
No More Bows written and illustrated by Samantha Cotterill is delightful picture book about a dog and his girl. Milly loves her dog Hugo. And she LOVES dressing up Hugo in bows. Hugo loves Milly, but Hugo does NOT like wearing bows. Not frilly ones or sparkly ones or bows with jewels. Finally, Hugo can?t take it anymore and he runs away! But life is lonely without Milly. He starts to think that maybe bows aren?t so dreadful after all?and maybe life is better with a friend by your side.

I Do Not Like Al’s Hat written and illustrated by illustrated by Erin McGill is a story about finding friendship and happiness against all odds. Herb the magician’s rabbit loves the attention, the applause, and the carrots that are thrown on the stage every night by his adoring audience. But Herb does not like being stuffed into Abracadabra Al’s hat and?Presto!?being pulled out by his ears. Ouch!
Good Night! Good Night! written and illustrated by Carin Berger is a playful and interactive picture book. It’s time for bed! Mama Bunny’s three little ones do not want to go to bed, but after good-night hugs, good-night kisses, good-night tickles, and a lot of jumping around, they finally do! A lively call-and-response text makes this book an especially good fit for storytime and bedtime. Large type, loads of rhythm and repetition, and Carin Berger’s beautiful cut-paper illustrations add to the excitement and make this a true celebration of the love between parent and child.
This Is a Serious Book written by Jodie Parachini and illustrated by Daniel Rieley is a funny book that pits its narrator against its characters in a hilarious way that invites reader participation and encourages kids to think about writing their own books and stories?just as donkey does here in the end. This is a very serious book. Nothing silly is allowed. There are no funny faces, no clowns, and definitely no shenanigans. A serious book is always respectful, and, of course, is always in black and white. But wait! Who’s this? Zebra might be black and white, but he is NOT serious. And he and his friends are ruining the book with their antics, parades, and parties!
I Am Not a Chair! written and illustrated by Ross Burach is a touching picture book about a giraffe who keeps being mistaken for a chair! Could there be anything worse for Giraffe? Maybe being sat on by a skunk or smooshed by two hapless hippos, or worst of all?cornered by a hungry lion? No one seems to notice that Giraffe is not standing around just to be sat upon. Will he be able to find his voice and make his friends realize who he really is? Check out the cute book trailer below!
I have read each of these to my girls several times and they enjoy them every single time! They each have a chart for the new year to mark off how many books they read. This is just the beginning and I can’t wait to see what all we read this year!
