My husband and I chose to watch The Grand Budapest Hotel for our date-night movie this weekend and we were not disappointed. The cast of characters is amazing and absolutely hilarious. We are big fans of Wes Anderson movies and this one is now our new favorite of his. In true Wes Anderson fashion, the narration is very tongue-in-cheek and I just love how beautiful and vibrant everything looks in the movie.
The movie is set in 1932 in a fictional European nation, Zubrowka. Monsieur Gustave is the concierge as the lovely Grand Budapest Hotel, where he is a bit of a gigolo and offers his affections to the loyal woman guests provided they are rich, blonde, elderly, and needy. One of his admirers, Madame D. dies mysteriously in the beginning of the movie and leaves her only valuable painting, “Boy with Apple” to M. Gustave. M. Gustave is charged and arrested with murder and with the help of Zero, his lobby boy in training and the movie’s narrator, he plans his jailbreak and attempts to clear his name and keep his painting.
We laughed right along until the very end always wondering would M. Gustave succeed in clearing his name. You’ll have to watch for yourself to see just how the movie ends.
