My son just started Preschool last month and I have heard some crazy things from the kids there. Actually, two of the kids are always asking me where their Mommies are since I’m always the last Mom to leave. They honestly think that all of us Mommies go somewhere together when we drop them off! A reader of mine said I should tell them we all go to Starbucks!
“My Mom lived in the 90s.”
Leslie McCollom has the pleasure (or curse) of listening to these oddball things all day long as a Preschool Teacher. In 2010 she decided that all these little crazy things should be kept and she created the Twitter feed @PreschoolGems where she jotted down all the bits of surprising knowledge from the mouths of our tots. It obviously became a huge hit, who doesn’t want to read what wacky things kids say! It actually gained over 160,000 followers! For those of us that haven’t had the pleasure of reading @PreschoolGems from the start, she compiled the best of the best of them into this book: Preschool Gems: Love, Death, Magic and Other Surprising Treasures from the Mouths of Babes.
I haven’t laughed so hard reading a book in years. Preschool Gems is good humor, the kind that rises up from your belly and bursts through your lips in fits of giggles. You can’t stop smiling the entire time you are reading it, especially if you are a Mom that has heard similar things come out of the mouths of your kids.
“I don’t care about time outs. I only care about my life.”
I used to keep little notes in the similar way of the stuff that came out of my oldest son’s mouth when he was little, I’m sure most of you tag things on Facebook! We all love to keep records of silly things, but what makes this really special is that it is not just one kid (or our kid), it is a compilation of tons of little voices all different, intelligent or estranged, letting go their little bits of wisdom (or insanity) upon a very special woman that decided to collect them.
Preschool Gems is a very beautiful piece of work.
I’m now following @PreschoolGems on Twitter, but since I missed so many of the best ones I’m glad I have this book! Don’t miss out on reading one of the best little books that will brighten your day no matter what is going on. It’s definitely a keeper.
