~I received a copy of Desert Island Disc by Recess Monkey for review. Opinions and stories are my own.~
In June this year I had shared with you Recess Monkey’s release of Deep Sea Diver, an electric pop rock album that was really full of energy and fun! Starting where their “Tambourine Submarine” crashed into a deserted island, Recess Monkey tones things down with Desert Island Disc.
Stranded in a beautiful tropical paradise in wonderful acoustic and island beats, the songs bring on the breeze of nostalgia and enchantment. There are 14 tracks that whisk you away into the sun and sea, they include:
- Coconut Radio
- Tallest Tree
- Trailblazer
- Hide and Seek
- Long Gone
- The Hermit
- Pearls of Wisdom
- The Cave
- My Treasure
- Getting a Sunburn
- Round the Campfire
- Dessert Island
- Smooth Sailing
- Going Home
Amazingly enough the album was even recorded on an island, Bainbridge Island in WA! There are also special guests: Justin Lansing of GRAMMY winning Okee Dokee Brothers (banjo), Dean Jones of Dog on Fleas (vocals) and Johnny Bregar (B3 organ)!
One of my favorite tracks is The Cave which is about, you guessed it, a cave at the end of the woods! It’s really amusing listening to this beautiful song with heart-wrenching vocals and someone arguing the whole time about not going into the cave. It really makes you laugh!
My Treasure is a lovely lullaby about finding a treasure and keeping it close to your heart. It sings of all the little trinkets children pick up along our their journeys and sends you on a nostalgic wave of moments of your own. I couldn’t help but start remembering little things that I had picked up as a child, pieces of shells and rocks. I grew up along the ocean in the summer and we spent long days sifting sand looking for real treasure and this brought back so many of those long ago days. I could listen to it forever!
You don’t want to miss listening to Desert Island Disc by Recess Monkey. They are by far one of my most favorite family/children’s music bands. Their music is so sophisticated that it hardly even sounds like children’s music at all! The lyrics are clever and so in tune with kids; it is really amazing what they do.
You can find out more information about Recess Monkey and their new album, Desert Island Disc, on their website. You can pre-order Dessert Island Disc for $14.99 and check out their other albums!
For those of you lucky enough, Recess Monkey now has their own series “Tambourine Submarine” at Teatro Zinzanni! Check out the showtimes! I always wanted to go there, but alas I have now moved to the Midwest.
