~I received a copy of Green Golly & Her Golden Flute for the purpose of review. Opinions and stories are my own.~
A lovely way to bring children to classic music, Green Golly & Her Golden Flute tells the story of a modern day Rapunzel who, coping with isolation and boredom, teaches herself how to play a beautiful golden flute. In a way to share her feelings through music, Green Golly shares the works of some of the world’s greatest composers: Mozart, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Gossec, Elgar, Bizet, Chopin, and Copland.
This story does two important things, in my opinion. It introduces children to classical music and also gives a more empowering story to our favorite Rapunzel. Instead of being locked away and waiting on rescue, she learns through her music about life and finds her spirit and individuality within it. You can’t help but fall in love with her new, more courageous, personality and at the end even the evil witch finds a happy ending.
At 2:20 in the video the Flutest, Barbara Siesel, will blow you away. I played the flute ages ago and I would have never been remotely capable of pulling off the magic she does with such a beautiful instrument.
Keith Torgan’s storytelling on the CD is incredibly fun. He does all the characters except Green Golly and will make you laugh at all the silliness. My tot loved hearing the witch and matching it with the book, but of course both of our favorite parts was hearing Green Golly play her flute.
Barbara and Keith came together with The Green Golly Project to bring the magic of story theater, music, comedy to children. I think they do an amazing job through Green Golly & Her Golden Flute. I’ve always felt that it was truly important for children to learn about classical music and it’s so great to see two imaginative and talented people share their gifts to bring that forth.
