I was recently given the opportunity to review a copy of ?CURE YOUR CHILD WITH FOOD The Hidden Connection Between Nutrition and Childhood Ailments? it was written by Kelly Dorfman, MS, LND. We were raised on the statement ?You Are What You Eat,? but I never took it this seriously. On the cover it has a column “Solutions For? Picky Eaters, Reflux, Stomachache, Ear Infections, Failure to Grow, Constipation, Rashes, Sleeplessness, Mood Disorder, ADHD and SPD, Hyperactivity, Dyspraxia (speech delays), and more. If I didn?t mention one of the areas you may have a concern about your child then your not being honest with yourself.
Naturally I skipped to the chapter that interested me most, ?Hyper and Annoying: Otherwise Known as Tyler and Oscar,? 4.5 million children have been diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). As a teacher I see children with this disorder every day. With boys it is easy to detect they are the ones bouncing off your walls, but the girls with this disorder are rarely noticed in the classroom. Instead a girl with ADHD is usually very quiet in the classroom.
This is what I have found to be true about my own daughter. For the past two years I have asked her teachers if she was inattentive or if her behavior was unacceptable and they assured me it wasn?t. After her first grade year I took her in for testing. I had her vision and hearing tested. Then while we were there had her tested for auditory processing disorder. I was thinking she was having trouble with comprehension. She scored a zero on the right brain side of this test, but I was told that she did not need any assistance. I just couldn?t understand how come her grades were so low if she was paying attention, behaving in class, and didn?t need assistance. However, when she got home to do her homework she was impossible to deal with. Since she suffers from sleep apnea I just assumed she was exhausted, but still worked with her in the areas she was struggling most. We saw a huge increase in class averages, but it was a constant struggle. Unfortunately, if your child’s grades improve you are not able to get assistance at school.
This summer I gave birth to my third child and decided to stay home, financially it was the best decision with two in daycare. My husband and I also decided that it would be best to homeschool my third grade daughter. After working with her daily for three months I made the above conclusion, but now what do I do about it? I am slowly changing her diet to find out what is triggering her behavior.
After reading chapter 11, I began at the beginning and now am questioning other possibilities such as an intolerance to milk. The same intolerance can react differently in your children. Who would have thought that food could cause all these problems? This book is packed with sound advice and useful information.
Each chapter discusses real-life cases that the author Kelly Dorfman has helped. She specializes in finding nutritional solutions to common ailments that we as parents face every day. She lectures around the country on diet and health. Kelly has made appearances on CNN and Fox News. She will teach you about her E.A.T. program to get your kids off drugs?antibiotics, laxatives, Prozac, Ritalin?and back to a state of natural well-being.
This book is a great resource for any parent.?
