This year’s Vacation Bible School (VBS) theme is ‘In the Wild’ and I was asked to lead crafts. One of my favorite crafts this year was the the ‘Key’. Each year during Vacation Bible School there is a Key Bible verse: “Jesus is the son of God†John 20:31. When I was scrounging through our VBS closet I found some keys cut out of plywood. I was very fortunate to have a third grade group of four students so that we could take the time to paint these ‘Keys’.
Supplies:
- Jigsaw
- Plywood
- Acrylic Paint (brown, black, white and gold)
- Paint Brushes
- Black Paint Pen
- Sander
- Paper Towels
Step 1: First you need to draw out a template for your key. Then you can cut you key out of plywood using your jigsaw. Make sure to sand your key to get rid of all the rough edges.
Step 2: Work quickly using all of your paint colors beginning with brown. Make sure to paint with the grain of the wood. I painted horizontally the length of the key.
Step 3: While your paint is wet add black, white and gold to highlight your key. If you add too much paint you can easily wipe it away using paper towels then add it back if you need to.
Step 4: Next, I added the ‘Key’ Bible Verse “Jesus is the son of God†with my paint pen!
Step 5: Since I had a rounded key I wanted to go in and add a detailed shadow to emphasize that area of the key. While the paint was still wet I added the shadow and faded it out.
That’s it and this would make a beautiful keepsake to remember everything your students will learn in Vacation Bible School! I added eyelets to my key so that I can hang my families keys on it.
Would you like for your child to create a ‘Key’ to hang in your home?
