I have been a fan of Ms. Frizzle for the past eighteen years! As a teach I never tire of her fun learning adventures, nor have I met a child didn’t like her series! My children have all of season 2 and 3 of The Magic School Bus DVD’s, and now we are participating in The Magic School Bus Science Club! I haven’t taught school in two years, but I’m always looking for awesome educational products for my children to enjoy learning.
In our first science kit I wanted to focus on?Bacteria & Fungi! I have selected EXPERIMENT 6 to share with you just because all children love balloons. Even my four-year-old asked if it was going to blow the balloon up! I love seeing their minds work!
EXPERIMENT 6 – Inflating a Balloon with a Fungus
Materials: Packet of yeast, measuring cup, warm water, sugar, balloon, test tube, cup and measuring spoons.
Methods:
1. Add 2 ml of yeast to the test tube.
2. Add 2 ml of sugar to the test tube.
3. Add 15 ml of warm water to the test tube.
4. Mix the ingredients by swirling the test tube.
5. Attache the balloon to the top of the test tube.
6. Place the test tube in a cup.
7. Wait and observe. Results: The ballon expands.
Conclusion: Yeast uses sugar as it’s food and produces gas when it breaks down. The gas is carbon dioxide and since it is lighter than water it rises and makes the balloon expand.
The Magic School Bus: Bacteria & Fungi Science Kit walks you through each experiment step-by-step. The kit includes any unusual supplies you would not normally have on hand.
This is a great way to get involved with your child’s education, and it’s okay if you know nothing about the topic. The kit gives you the results and conclusion so you are able to give your child an exact explanation of what took place.
