Do you have a tween that doesn’t enjoy reading?? My daughter just started reading for pleasure this past summer.? We always sign up for our local Summer Reading Program, but it has always been impossible to get my eldest to participate.? This was the first summer she wanted to participate and read for pleasure.? It was wonderful, now I plan to keep her enthusiasm going by finding great reading material for her like The Haunted House Project by Tricia Clasen and?A Blind Guide to Normal by Beth Vrabel.
THE HAUNTED HOUSE PROJECT by Tricia Clasen
Since her mom died, Andie’s family has crumbled, and Andie’s afraid of what will happen if people find out just how bad things are. She’s not sure how long she can hide the fact that there’s no food or money in the house…or adults, for that matter. When her science partner suggests they study paranormal activity, Andie gets an idea. She wants a sign from her mom, and she wonders if her family does, too. Pretending to be her mother’s ghost, Andie sprays perfume, changes TV channels, and moves pictures. Haunting her house is Andie’s last hope to bring her family back into the land of the living. For anyone who loved Counting by 7s, The Haunted House Project is a journey through loss and grief, but ultimately a story of hope and self-reliance

A BLIND GUIDE TO NORMAL by Beth Vrabel
Richie Ryder Raymond can find the punchline in any situation, even in his limited vision and prosthetic eye. During the past year at Addison School for the Blind, Ryder’s quick wit earned the respect and friendship of his classmates, and he’s convinced that heading to mainstream school for 8th grade is going to be awesome? Until he learns that the only thing worse than explaining a joke is being the punchline. But with help and encouragement from his family and friends, Ryder finds the strength to not only fight back, but to make peace. This exciting companion to A Blind Guide to Stinkville weaves humor, recovery and second chances into an unforgettable story, with characters who will hook you from page one.
