I absolutely love October and everything about it. In my family we celebrate several birthdays this month and of course there is the all fun Halloween. We really get into the spirit all month long. My girls go through several costumes before deciding on “the one” and we enjoy decorating the house. For each holiday I get out a box with themed books for us to read. The girls got super excited to see me pull out the Halloween box and even more excited to see the 5 new titles? we have just added to our collection. Here are a few Ghoulishly Good Reads For Halloween.
Today is Halloween and Nancy can’t wait to collect candy from each house she visits. But it’s hard to leave all those delectable treats in her pumpkin pail. Is there such a thing as too much candy?
Our favorite fancy girl is back in Fancy Nancy: Candy Bonanza. She is dressed as the Sugar Plum Fairy from the Nutcracker ballet. she is off trick or treating and her mom warns her not to eat too much candy. Nancy eats a few pieces of candy here and there but they disappear so quickly she doesn’t realize how much she is eating! It isn’t long before her stomach starts to hurt and her dad takes her home. This book is a great lesson on not eating too much candy at once on Halloween! It also includes 35 spooky stickers.
It’s Halloween, and Splat is determined to be the scariest cat in the class. Unfortunately, his costume is more silly than frightening, and when Splat gets spooked by a jack-o’-lantern, he looks like the scaredy-est cat in the whole school. But then a mysterious creature appears in Mrs. Wimpydimple’s classroom, and Splat surprises everyone?especially himself?with his fur-raising abilities!
Splat is an adorable cat that is all ready for the class Halloween party at school in Scaredy-Cat, Splat! While getting his pumpkin ready for school he finds a super scary spider on it! With his mom’s help the spider is caught in a jar so he can take to school with him. Splat really wants to win for scariest cat in class but even his spider costume and his fun pumpkin or more cute than scary. Once at school his teacher tells an incredibly scary story that scares them all. Splat is so scared he knocks his pumpkin onto his head. This book is fun and adorable for all little ones and the illustrations are just as cute. Read to find out who wins scariest cat in class!
Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate.
The first one said,
“Oh my, it’s getting late.”Join Pete the Cat as he rocks out to this cool adaptation of the classic Halloween song “Five Little Pumpkins.”
Pete the Cat: Five Little Pumpkins is a twist on the song “Five Little Pumpkins.” It is a quick read but has ridiculously cute illustrations and is another fun adventure with that groovy Pete the Cat.
Hi! I am Otter.
Halloween is the best holiday ever! It is also a very busy time for me and Teddy: we have to pick pumpkins, decorate the house, and make scary costumes. With so much to do, it’s a good thing I’m a Halloween expert!
Otter Loves Halloween! and along with some help from Otter Keeper he must get and decorate a pumpkin as well as get costumes ready for everyone for the big night. Otter decides to be a scary witch and even practices being scary! Otter is all ready for the trick-or-treaters. As soon as Otter Keeper opens the door Otter finds himself ridiculously scared of those costumes and runs under the bed. Otter Keeper has a plan so Otter won’t be scared any more and together they can still enjoy the night. The illustrations really bring out the cuteness that is Otter and all his adventures dressing up his stuffed animals.
A little girl believes her mother is a good witch, and she is a special witch’s cat. Together, they’re out to find the perfect Halloween costume. But what could be better than being a witch’s cat?
To create the whimsical world of Witch’s Cat, author-illustrator Harriet Muncaster handcrafted miniature three-dimensional scenes using paper, foil, fabric, and other materials, then dramatically lit and photographed them for a truly magical look.
Happy Halloween, Witch’s Cat! by Harriet Muncaster is a little different as the illustrations are made with 3 dimensional scenes. It really shows through in the book and makes it more magical and whimsical. The little girl is off to the store with her mom to find the perfect Halloween costume but after thinking about all of them none are just right for her.
These books are listed for the 4-8 age range but my 3.5 year old loves them as much as my 6 year old. These are great books to get into the spirit of Halloween. Cute stories and even cuter illustrations are what picture books are all about!
