Reading is an important part of my child’s day. Every night before bed, we read a few stories and then it’s off to dreamland for him. Those three nighttime books are always the perfect way to end the day, but I’ll admit, those few books don’t feel like much. My son has quite an extensive collection of books and I wish I had more time to read with him, but we’re always busy and out and I can’t say I have room in my purse to carry books around for fun. Now with the StorySnacker App, I can always have stories ready to read right on my smartphone.

StorySnacker is the brainchild of award-winning children’s book author Erik Slangerup. His new app is designed to give parents more chances to fit storytime into their modern, busy lives with a mobile collection of original, 60-second, ‘snack-size stories.? Parents on the go will be able to use their phones to read a series of quick stories to their kids?whenever a free minute pops up.
As the times are changing, story time must change, too. There are so many distractions in our daily lives, and while more mobile time may seem like a bad thing, it actually may be just what story time needs to help it survive. There have been a countless number of times where I was out and waiting with my son – whether in the grocery store line, waiting for soccer practice to start, or when out to dinner – and I wished we had a better way to engage than him asking to just watch a quick show or play a game on my phone. The StorySnacker app seems like just the kind of children’s app I need for times like these or even when we just want a quick minute or two to relax from playing at home.
Right now there are 20 awesome stories with illustrations fully developed, another 20 in development, and plans for at least 60 more, for an estimated total of 100. The app will come with a few stories pre-loaded, and additional stories will regularly be released in “StorySnack-Packs” of 3. Those who support it on KickStarter over the next few weeks have the chance to receive special access to unlimited stories, signed prints, and other rewards. They’re prototyping it now, and will launch StorySnacker on the App Store by November 2015. There are also plans to create iPad and Android versions of the app as well.
I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on this app and plan to support this through their Kickstarter. The illustrations I’ve seen along with the stories are absolutely perfect and go beyond what I would expect from an app. Although one may not typically think of stories and a mobile device, there’s a certain whimsy and fun within each of the stories that make this something I know will be something both my son and I enjoy doing together.
