My son loves learning about animals. Most of the books we read are now usually non-fiction and are about the various creatures of the world. As a Florida boy that has spent plenty of time around the water, he naturally loves sea animals. We couldn’t wait to read and see the amazing pictures in the latest book from David FitzSimmons, Curious Critters: Marine.
Wildlife photographer and environmental educator David FitzSimmons is on a mission to get children to fall in love with animals of the ocean by making reading as engaging and educational as a swim in the sea. His new book, Curious Critters Marine, the third book in his popular Curious Critters series, is being released on April 22, Earth Day 2015. And it’s bound to make a splash!
FitzSimmons has taken amazingly detailed and up-close photographs of creatures in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf of Mexico. Through his fantastic images, children are able to go face-to-face with a variety of sea life animals including the American lobster, cushion sea star, and more.
There’s a playful prose accompanying each critter as well. FitzSimmons imagined he was talking to each animal and what they would say as he wrote about them. Some of the critters have songs, like the cushion sea star while others have poems or just describe their daily life. It made reading and learning more personal and fun.
My son absolutely loved this book. Reading Curious Critters: Marine allowed him to experience nature in a whole new way. It’s not often than one can come face-to-face with a Loggerhead sea turtle or a Giant Pacific octopus, but this book allowed him to do that all while learning about each critter of the sea. To continue the learning, there’s a glossary, natural history information, and life-size silhouettes. This is a fantastic book for children of all ages and is one that will be in our book collection for many years to come.
