I’m sure many of you are familiar with author Dav Pilkey, widely known for his Captain Underpants series. But did you know, that just like many people, Dav suffered from ADHD, reading and behavioral challenges? Well he did and in second grade when he teacher ripped up the comic book he had written and told him he couldn’t spend the rest of his life making silly books, he didn’t listen. Now the world has him to thank for standing his ground and believing in himself. It may seem like life sets limits for us, but we each have the ability to push through and reach for the stars.
Dav’s Ricky Picotta series is now quite popular with young ones and I’m sure many of your children have either read or at least heard about the series.
“Ricky Ricotta is a little mouse with BIG problems! Every day he is picked on by the neighborhood bullies. He lives in Squeakyville with his mother and father, and being an only mouse, he is often lonely. That is until SOMETHING BIG HAPPENS! A giant flying robot enters Ricky’s life and an unlikely friendship is born! Together, Ricky and his Robot must save the planet from a galaxy bursting with bad guys!”
Getting kids to want to read can be sometimes challenging. You’ve got to find whatever type of books pique their interest and that’s what’s wonderful about the Ricky Ricotta series. Yes, they’re books, but they also have comics, so they’re more appealing to the type of kid who doesn’t have as much interest in reading, but then at the same time, appeal to the kids who love to read.
