One of the most important things that I’ve taught my children as a parent is compassion. They genuinely care about other people and it amazes me every day. Just last week, Big Bro was able to work with his daddy doing clean up. They were working in one of Milwaukee’s not so great neighborhoods where poverty can be seen almost everywhere you look. He went to the gas station with one of the other workers on this very hot day and a guy asked if he had any change so that he could get something to drink. Big Bro had a one and a five dollar bill on him, so he gave the guy the five dollar bill so that he could get something to eat along with a cold drink.
He came home, told me and my heart melted. While I did let him know he should have given the guy the dollar, instead of leaving himself with only one dollar, I told him that his heart was in the right place and he made me proud. A simple act of kindness like this can go a long way!
That’s why I support organizations like Champions for Kids and why I get involved with many projects that give back during the year. For me, these types of organizations allow me to be able to lend a helping hand, without having to dig too deep in my already small pockets. Champions for Kids, Tyson Foods, and KRAFT Foods have teamed up during the month of August to “Be a Hunger Hero” at Sam’s Club. Anytime you purchase Tyson? Fully Cooked Chicken Nuggets 5 lb. bag, KRAFT Macaroni & Cheese Dinner 7.25 oz., 12 pack or CAPRI SUN Juice Drink Variety Pack – 40 pouches at Sam’s Club, they will donate a helping of food to a child in need.
This is a wonderful chance for not only my family, but other families as well to help out a child in need. With back to school just a few short weeks away, these are products that we tend to keep in stock anyway, so it only makes sense for me to stock up on them now at Sam’s Club; when it can make the most difference.
16 million children, in the US alone, live in poverty. That number is just ridiculous because these kids are our neighbors, classmates and co-workers’ children. They may even be your child’s friend! It saddens me to know that these children go hungry and if I help even just one child, I know that I’m making a difference.
