Insight Kids Interactive Books from the New Spring 2014 Catalog + Giveaway!

I was recently given the pleasure of reviewing a few books from Insight Kids, the new addition to Insight Editions this past year. These books are designed to inspire children through innovative interactive features and illustrations. The books we had chosen have quickly become family favorites, in fact, a few of them are hanging up in our house! 

This is the educational Pop-Up Book “Ants” from the Bouncing Bugs collection. It’s not only an educational flap book for young children about ants, but turns into a 3D ant you can bounce or hang! 

We also have the Fly, Bee and Wasp books by David Hawcock; all of which are hanging up in our windows. My youngest is in love with them and is so interested in the odd facts about the bugs, like where wasps nests can be and how ants can squirt acid. Of course his favorite part is watching them in the windows.

If your child isn’t into the pop-up style book, they also have a beautifully illustrated story Bugs Life or Bee Life by Lynette Evans which shares the day to day life of a Ladybug and a Bee. 

If your child really likes the interaction with pop-up books and art, The Interactive Art Book by Ron Van Der Meer and Frank Whitford is perfect. My husband and I are actually really into this book just as much as our kids! It not only teaches you about the fundamentals of art, such as light and color, pattern and composition, narrative, style and movement but allows you to see a sort of work in progress with the art to gain an appreciation for how it was created. 

This book has so much for everyone, no matter whether you are an art lover currently or are new and learning about it. My son’s favorite is the mobile of course. There are many ways to create it and make it move, but most importantly it teaches you about why the mobile is important and its process with movement and color. My personal favorite is the eye view of the artist. There are a few models where you can peek through and see a representation of what they saw as the artist and a 3D version of the art itself!

It also comes with an Activity Book with instructions for composing pictures and making prints, collages, scratch pictures, potato prints, sculptures, and more. There is so much packed into this book that it keeps us busy for a long time!

The last book we had reviewed was Whose Egg? The Lift-the-Flap Book by Lynette Evans. This is one of her most well known books so you might have heard of it! Each page gives a description of the animal whose egg you have to guess. Then you lift the flap to see who it is! The fun part is seeing what your child’s imagination can conjure up from the description.

Whose Egg? is illustrated with perfect depth and color by Guy Troughton and is our newest treasure. It’s nice that the animals are not the ones expected from every book and will give some new surprises to parents and kids.

I am in love with Insight Editions and their children’s book offshoot Insight Kids. Their books are incredible, honestly. You only have to look through the selection to want to take everything home! From the Harry Potter Pop-Up Book to How To Banish Fears book series (which includes Nightmares and Pirates), there are so many great books to choose from and they especially make perfect gifts for children (and adults!).
