Ruby's Studio: A Little Book About Feelings and The Feelings Show DVD Review

Now that Nugget is 2, his temper tantrums have begun. Although he can speak well, it’s hard for him to articulate exactly what is going on for him emotionally. He doesn’t quite grasp that what he’s feeling can be associated with words. I’ve been trying to get him to describe his feelings, but it wasn’t working well. With Valentine’s Day coming up and there being lots of talking about feelings, I thought he needed a little something extra to help him understand.

Ruby’s Studio, created by The Mother Company, has a series of DVDs and books centered around feelings, friendship, and safety. I watched The Feelings Show with Nugget and we both loved it. The show held his attention the whole time, but not in the rushed, screen-flashing sort of way that regular shows do. He really liked that there were cartoon character stories mixed in with real people and that helped to keep his interest. I appreciated that there were children talking about their feelings in an unscripted sounding way. My favorite part was when Ruby talked to the children and showed them how to calm down when they’re upset and do a deep breathing exercise. It’s an excellent technique that I personally use and I loved when Nugget stood up to mimic what they were doing. The whole show felt genuine and was a refreshing change to what he normally watches.

We also got the book ‘A Little Book About Feelings‘ that supplements the show. Nugget really liked the felt animals in the book and I thought the pictures were really cute and had a great overall message. He had an easy time identifying the feelings based on the animals faces in the book.

Nugget has asked to read this book everyday. He likes to just sit down and go through the pictures and now he can tell me which animals look happy or sad. He’s not quite as familiar with some of the other emotions, but he’s starting to identify his own feelings of happy and sad and I know as he gets older, this book will help him with other feelings too.

Any of the Ruby’s Studio books or DVDs would be a great addition to your child’s collection and would make a special Valentine’s Day gift. With the beautiful illustrations and great story-lines, you can’t go wrong with any of their products.
