It is frightening to think that the current generation of kids growing up today might die before their parents because their eating habits are making them so obese. Healthy eating shouldn?t mean dieting for these kids ? it should mean changing how and what they eat so that it becomes second nature, to ensure that they enjoy a long and healthy adult life. Information on how to eat healthily can be found here at the Canadian pharmacy, but here are some tips on how to get your kids eating their way to better health and a safer physical condition.
Keeping it in the family
For starters, get the whole family round the dining table for meals. With the TV turned off, there?ll be no distractions and it’s a chance to catch up with the children. Kids like routines, so make the mealtimes regular. Don?t skip breakfast, as it gives kids the energy they?ll need for school. And try to make all mealtimes enjoyable, with lots of chatter and no scolding, so that kids don?t make negative associations with food. It’s also an opportunity to start introducing new foods into their diet.
Stocking up
Shop smarter. Buy fruit and keep it in plain sight in a fruit bowl, so kids can?t forget that it’s there. To satisfy savory munchies, stock up on nuts, dry cereal, plain popcorn or pretzels. Go for color and buy a variety of different colored fruit and vegetables. If junk food isn?t in the cupboards, kids won?t be able to eat it. That’s not to say that soda and ice cream are off the menu. Just keep fizzy drinks, potato chips and candy for special treats, not for every day consumption.
Sizing up
Portion size is key: remember, children don?t need the same amount of food as adults so don?t supersize their meals. In addition, don?t force kids to eat everything on their plates, as it may cause them to miss the signs telling them when they are full and they will overeat. Never use food as a bribe or a reward, as it encourages a child to eat for other reasons rather than just being hungry.
Picky eaters
It is quite normal for some children to be fussy over their food, sometimes refusing to even let one type of food touch another on a plate. Pushing food in front of picky eaters and insisting they eat won?t work. Only present them with food when they are hungry, and only introduce one new food at a time. Try and make it fun ? cut the food up into unusual shapes or make a game out of eating. Mix new food with ones the picky eater already eats, and take a bite of it yourself to prove that it’s good. Don?t let the picky eater fill up on drinks either, and keep snacks to no more than two per day.
Child labor
Get kids involved in the preparation and cooking of food. They are far more likely to be interested in eating a meal they have helped to create, and they?ll be learning practical life skills for the future. Some children might be interested in buying the groceries that go into making the meals, and if this happens, great, it’s a chance to teach them to read the labels on food and encourage them to start making their own choices about what they eat.
