Homemade Laundry Detergent
Homemade laundry detergent is really easy to make, and will save you and your family money every month on your grocery bill. In fact it is so?easy to make, that once you?decide you want to try it you will be kicking yourself and wondering why you didn’t start making your own detergent years ago. The version of homemade laundry detergent that I make consists of four easy to find and fairly inexpensive ingredients.
What you need:
-
Fels-naptha ~ .97 cents a bar
-
LA’s Totally Awesome Oxygen Cleaner ~ $1.00 (If you prefer another brand of Oxygen cleaner feel free to use that. I have been using LA’s Totally Awesome brand?Oxy cleaner for over a year now. I buy it Dollar Tree. It rocks. Plus it’s only a buck!)
-
Borax ~ $3.50
-
Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda ~ 3.50
-
Something to store it…originally I had it stored in an old gallon juice container, but my Mom is into these really cool glass jars and she picked one up for me to store my detergent in, SCORE. But seriously anything you have laying around will do, think simple, used coffee can, milk jug, etc.
Steps to make the detergent:
-
Mix together 1 cup Borax, 1 cup Washing soda, and 1/2 cup Oxygen cleaner.
-
Grate the Fels-naptha bar over the top the powder mixture and stir.
-
Transfer the mixture into some sort of a storage container. Tada!
?Easy right? So I bet now your wondering how much to use on your wash? I generally use about 4 Tbsp. or 1/4 cup for large loads and about 2 Tbsp. for smaller loads. I also use this detergent on my cloth diapers (2 Tbsp.). It has helped the stinkies in my cloth diapers tremendously. I have an old school top loader and I have never tried this in my Mom’s new fangled futuristic front loader. Although from what I have read I think you can get away with using it in the HE machines, but please don’t quote me on that.
?Happy Laundering!
