As many of you know, I am the primary caregiver for my siblings. My sister moved out shortly after my wedding, so now it’s just my brothers that I have to take care of; although I will always look out for my sister too. Just because she “left the nest” so to speak, doesn’t mean I don’t worry about her.
With all the worrying and caring for my younger siblings, I am sure that it won’t stop there. I am the oldest and there is an entire generation between my siblings and I. In fact, they are not that much older than my own children. What does that mean for me?
I will most likely have to make all of the care decisions for our mother when the time comes that she will not be able to live on her own anymore. She’s just over 50, but I have a feeling it won’t be too long before she is in a long term care facility.
After doing some research, the results I found were quite scary. Here is what I found:
- The average cost of living in a nursing home in a private room is $206 per day! That’s over $75,000 per year!
- It costs over $3,000 to live in a one bedroom unit in an assisted care facility.
- Medicare doesn’t cover many of the costs for long term care.
