The Do-Deca Pentathlon is an amusing comedy about two grown men that take sibling rivalry to new a whole other level. The secretly decide during a family reunion that they will resurrect a decades-old quest to be the absolute best. The brothers, Mark (Steve Zissis) and Jeremy (Mark Kelly), are completely (kind of insanely) determined to complete 25 events in order to find the true champion. Between leg wrestling, ping-ponging and laser tagging to the finish line. Thankfully, they learn some life lessons along the way. The film is written and directed by the Duplass Brothers, who have some successful Sundance Film Hits: The Puffy Chair, Cyrus and the upcoming Jeff Who Lives at Home!

I really loved this movie. It wasn’t that it was just incredibly hilarious to watch, but it had a lot of heart in it. The family was incredibly real to watch, with phenomenal acting from relatively unknown actors. I also think that is why it seemed so realistic. Another wonderful thing is that it really highlights the expressions, the way men competitive men communicate and the primal need to be the best, even at the cost of common sense.
I wouldn’t say this is exactly a ‘family film’, I’m sure teenagers would get a kick out of watching two brothers get into a no-holds bar competition, but the meaning would be lost on them. It is more for the parents as there is a lot of depth behind the hilarity and something most of us older people with siblings will understand.
