Sometimes, things aren’t exactly as they seem. Marlow and the Monster by Sharon Cramer reminds me of this each time I read the story to my son. It isn’t your typical ‘monster under the bed’ story and Marlow has a little more gumption towards his situation than most kids with roaring monsters keeping them up at night. Just as the Monster in the story is bright in it’s water colored hues, so is the understanding Marlow gains at the end of the story. You almost believe that the monster will bleed color onto the pages and The End show Marlow just as extraordinary.
Written by a Mom, who has had her fair share of Monsters in her kid’s rooms, Sharon Cramer gives parents and children the power to change their imagination from one that leaves the scary monster under the bed, to visualizing it as something silly and amusing!
The story is illustrated in quill pen and ink, only the Monster is splashed with color. Each image takes her 30-40 hours to create. She calls it her, “first trip to the Wild Side!”
This is one of my favorite stories. It has that classic feel of Where the Wild Things Are with a modern twist, Marlow could be anyone’s little boy and the monster… well… he could be under anyone’s bed.
