At the height of the Cold War, Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), a.k.a. MI6 and code-named the Circus, has been compromised. An ever-watchful former top lieutenant and career spy, George Smiley (Gary Oldman, The Dark Knight, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix ), is called out of retirement by the government to help identify and track a suspected mole at the top of the agency. The list of suspects is narrowed to five men. Even before the startling truth is revealed, the emotional and physical tolls on the players enmeshed in the deadly international spy game will escalate.
From the beginning of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy you are set with a feeling of intrigue as you watch the main character, George Smiley, walk out of the building into retirement and the rest of the characters quickly become suspect as they go about their own motives. The idea of them all being pieces on a chessboard is perfect. Chess is a game of strategy, patience and skill and everyone has their motivations.
This isn’t a fast paced, action packed movie. It is a very well thought out, incredibly scripted, film with superb acting. A period piece interwoven with espionage and heavy character drama. While watching it, I often thought that this movie better portrayed the life of a spy than most other dramatized films.
In the stories of the characters, especially George Smiley, there were so many things said without words as they played back and forth with the past and present of his life, always hiding the face of his wife and leaving her lingering on the precipice as he must have felt. The movie requires your attention for its fullness, otherwise it might seem dense and overdrawn time wise, but in all actuality it is very precise in respect to its original John le Carre’s screenplay and for those of you that love actual spy movies, it would only heighten your collection.
