The bear went over the mountain, to see what he could see, hear what he could hear, smell what he could smell, touch what he could touch, and taste what he could taste; what a busy bear! In this beautiful retelling of a classic children’s song, bestselling author and illustrator Iza Trapani brings to life the seasonal activities of one cuddly bear. The bear sets out at the beginning of spring and finds fun around every corner, such as watching bunnies hop and smelling flowers. When the bear finds something unpleasant, like a smelly skunk or a prickly porcupine, he learns that the five senses have both good and bad traits. But that is all right, because there is always something just as exciting to try next!

I had the opportunity to read and review a great new book, The Bear Went Over the Mountain by author Iza Trapani. Iza Trapani is a bestselling author and illustrator (most known for her retelling of The Itsy Bitsy Spider, which sold over a million copies).

As a Kindergarten teacher and Mom to a 3 year old, I really love a good picture book. Simone loves books, and she really liked the rhythm and pictures in the book. The Bear’s feelings are very clear in the illustrations, she laughed when she saw his face as he smelled a skunk! At the end of the book is sheet music for the original song, and she really liked it when I sang the words to her.

As a Kindergarten teacher I look for academic connections – I found a bunch! The book has 5 senses concepts with examples (the bear sees dragonflies, hears a cricket chirping, etc.) and also is full of rhyming words. I read it to my students and had them listen for the rhyming words – they had a great time finding the fun rhymes like, “shiny and tiny” or, “peeping and creeping”. We also talked about how descriptive the words were- things just didn’t smell nice, the author used great descriptive adjectives like minty and moldy.

This is a great book for young children – the repetitive text and rhythm help them to learn what to expect, and the great illustrations and wonderful descriptive words really helps add new words to your child’s vocabulary.

The Bear Went Over the Mountain is published by Sky Pony Press which is an imprint of Skyhorse Publishing, Inc. and will be available for purchase in hardcover starting April 1, 2012. It is also available as an e-book!
