Two of my boys and I on our recent Disney Land Vacation |
Vacations are so much fun. You get to take a break from the everyday and enjoy somewhere new. But being in a different city can make fitness tough, especially for a runner like myself. I am used to running on our local trails and around my neighborhood. These are comfortable areas for me. I know that I won’t get lost. In a new city, that is just not a good option, unless they have a well defined trail system. So, what’s a girl to do?
If you are staying in a hotel, check to see if they have a gym or fitness room. On our recent family vacation we stayed in two different hotels. The first had a small room with four cardio based machines (one stationary bike, two treadmills and one eliptical). The second actually had a larger room complete with free weights, weight machines and multiple cardio machines. These are great fitness resources away from home.
You can also take advantage of the hotel pool. Lap swimming or aquatic fitness routines are great, low-impact exercise, and can be done in the hotel pool (weather permitting). Find aquatic fitness routines online (many do require a kickboard and/or a water noodle, which might not be practical if you are flying, but could easily be packed in the car if you are driving to your vacation location.) like this one from Livestrong.com
If your hotel does not have a workout room or gym, they may have an agreement with a gym nearby. Check with the front desk or concierge for fitness options in the area. If they don’t have an agreement somewhere, they may be able to suggest inexpensive options or local trail systems.
If all else fails, a simple push-ups, abs and squats workout in the hotel room will keep you going for a few days! But most of all, have fun! Some of the activities you do on vacation are a form of exercise in and of themselves..take Disney Land for example…all that walking surely burns a lot of calories. The same can be said for museums or other places that require a lot of walking.
