One Spark
One Spark is the break out, solo album of Gabe Dixon, of the (former) Gabe Dixon Band. The album went live on August 23rd, 2011.
I had the pleasure of snagging a copy and let me tell you, I’m so happy I did! This guy is AMAZING! His style is reminiscent of Billy Joel and Paul McCartney, but, with the pop-ish flow of Jason Mraz and a dash of heartfelt singer, Michael Buble. In other words, Dixon is hard to pin down and in a class of his own.
The albums first track, Strike, makes a promise, “one little spark can make a thousand more degrees…” and the remaining eleven tracks do not disappoint. Each song is filled with Dixon’s soul and he’s not afraid to let it all hang out. As the tracks play out, it’s like a glimpse at old love letters, from past and present. Some songs are filled with flirtatious whimsy, while others make you angst over those you may not have completely forgotten.
My personal favorite track is called My Favorite, which was co-written by former Semisonic front man, Dan Wilson. It’s filled with romantic lyrics such as,
How can you not smile at that?
A later track, Burn For You, brings us back down to earth. The mood is bluesy and a touch dark. Dixon sings,
If my husband could sing lyrics like that to me during a fight, I doubt our fights would last very long.
I look forward to watching Dixon’s solo career take off. As he was inspired by sleepless nights as a new dad, we can only hope the next years as a father to a toddler and so forth, can give Dixon insight into richer, deeper and more soulful melodies.
