Family Trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula
Summer vacations are always fun. Summer evokes thoughts of sand, the sun, relaxing next to the water, and always somewhere warm. Don?t rely on vacations you might find while watching TV reviews. Everyone loves a good summer vacation, but it sure doesn?t even compare to the beauty the Upper Peninsula has to offer during the fall. It has one of the most scenic drives that the United States has to offer, a vast wilderness, plenty of wildlife, amazing lakes, and the one thing I found was peace of mind.
Depending on where you are coming from the drive can be a long one, but one thing is for sure. Highway 2 takes you along the coast of Lake Michigan, through the woods, and back again. When the leaves are turning, the ride is as colorful as I?ve ever seen. The long, winding, two lane, highway is something you have to drive down to experience. It is intriguing, beautiful, and relaxing all at once.
The Upper Peninsula accounts for one third of the landmass for Michigan, but only 3% of the population. This leaves plenty of room for endless forests to be explored. Most of the areas you can explore are untouched, and feels like countless miles away from civilization. We made it a point not to wander around alone, just for safety sake.
The wildlife can be scary at times. They don?t have any lions and tigers, but oh my do they have bears. Bear hunting is big and the boys did some bear hunting while we were there. No luck for them but an enjoyable vacation nonetheless. Maybe the scariest things were the wolves you could hear howling at night, seemingly just yards away form your tent.
My favorite part of the trip was the lake. The lake we visited was Bobcat Lake. It is a small, secluded lake on the western side of the peninsula. It features some good fishing and is surrounded by rolling hills of forest, with a few campsites to set up your camp. When we were visiting in mid October it felt like it was our own lake. We took a small 12ft boat with us so crossing the lake took about 15 minutes. It was a very calming experience to just stroll along gently through the undisturbed water. Nothing like I have ever experienced before.
This isn?t a family’s ordinary get away, but I highly recommend taking a trip to the Upper Peninsula. Some of the most beautiful country I have ever seen. We enjoyed a 4 nights/ 5-day trip that I wish could have lasted longer. It was a great place to bond with family members, and turn your wireless items off. We did everything together and I found that all of my worries seemed to melt away. It was wonderful, and I plan on going back soon!
