Stamp a Little Love in Your Heart: Making Valentine’s Day T-Shirts with Kids
In the Northeast, most public school children have had at least one (if not three!) days off of school each week so far in 2011, due to inclement weather. January has been the snowiest month on record in some areas and certainly, the least school-iest month my kids have ever lucked into. With all of this extra at-home time, we?re actually ahead of ourselves when it comes to Valentine’s Day. Sweet, sassy 2×4? Valentines have already been written to each classmate, clearing the way for today’s snow day to be dedicated to wearing our hearts on our sleeves:
Materials Needed: ? Fabric paint in reds, pinks, purples, or color of your choice
? Paper plate
? Cotton T-Shirt (Long or short-sleeved)
? Paper towels (for wiping hands)
? Paper plate
? Cotton T-Shirt (Long or short-sleeved)
? Paper towels (for wiping hands)
Instructions:
-
Pour a quarter-sized amount of each color of fabric paint onto a paper plate.
-
Help your child spread a T-shirt onto a work surface. I like using pink or white to match the Valentine’s Day theme, but any color will work, as long as it is light enough for the fabric paint to show up.
-
Guide your child in dipping her index finger into the paint, then stamping a heart shape onto her T-shirt by overlapping two fingerprints.
-
Repeat the heart-prints around the entire collar of the shirt or line a long-sleeved T-shirt with fingerprint heart.
Variations:
-
Use different colors of paint for each fingerprint within the same heart or alternate heart colors within a chosen pattern
-
Make a large heart pattern on the front of the shirt with dozens of small fingerprint hearts.
-
If your child’s school celebrates ?100 Days,? make 50 hearts on the shirt, out of 100 paired fingerprints.
-
This is a great, wearable craft for a snow day, Valentine’s Day, or any day your child wants to wear her heart on her sleeve!
