About Dismissed with Prejudice:
Dismissed with Prejudice is a legal drama that deals with the dark side of a powerful university, major college sports and state government. At the urging of a wealthy businessman and booster with mafia ties, an assistant coach is fired under false pretenses. Landon Duhon, a smalltown lawyer, reads about it in the paper and becomes suspicious. It’s the third assistant in the last seven years fired by the same multi-million-dollar head coach, a political schmoozer and philanderer. Duhon sends his colleague to investigate and slowly uncovers layer upon layer of fraud, corruption and backroom deals. The assistant’s career is over regardless of the outcome, but he decides to sue for wrongful termination, setting in motion a legal battle that escalates into threats, violence and murder. The novel is a classic “little guy against the system” story with insight into the bureaucracy, legal environment, and corrupting influence of money in the university and political arena.
This summer was really busy for us, so my reading list was definitely something that suffered considering the whole time on my hands factor. On my trip to Arkansas a couple of weeks ago, I knew I would need reading material for the plane ride and nights alone in my hotel room. Dismissed with Prejudice is the read I took along for the ride, literally!
It all started at the airport in Milwaukee. I went super early because I just didn’t know what to expect my first time flying. I had 1 1/2 hours to kill while waiting for my plane. Instead of snooping around the little shops, I sat right there by the gate and started to read. My journey through Dismissed with Prejudice continued through my whole stay in Arkansas, and the book was about half way done by the time I made it home. Of course I had a ton of things to catch up on after my trip, so I didn’t get to finish it until a few days ago.
This is the kind of book that I have never read before. I haven’t tampered in the sports area once. But, this wasn’t just a sports story. It was about corruption, lies and even murder. Reading through that book, I was amazed at how far people would go to keep appearances and make sure they came out ahead. I couldn’t believe the lines people would cross and the laws they would break just to be number one. Honestly, it disturbed me!
Dismissed with prejudice is an outstanding book, far surpassing my expectations. Fletcher Cockrell did an amazing job telling this story, and why shouldn’t he have? After all, he had inside experience! This isn’t just a read for sports fans, it’s for anyone that likes suspense, politics {or doesn’t in this matter} and sports.
