One of the things that I love most about the holiday season is that people are more focused on love and giving. We gather with family and friends during this time of year, shop for the perfect gift for those we love and are generally in the cheerful holiday spirit. What gets to me the most is the many people who find it in their hearts to give to others, complete strangers who are less fortunate that them. Each year, that one act starts to renew my faith in humanity. It’s important to open up our hearts and our wallets to give back to the community and today I’m sharing some easy ways to give back during the holidays.
Ways to Give back During the Holidays
- Donate food – There are local food banks and food pantries all over the place, which are super easy to give to. Most accept food and monetary donations, all going to a great cause – feeding the hungry!
- Gift toys to less fortunate children – So many of us are able to provide an abundance of gifts that our children love but many families struggle just to make ends meet and the holidays are a huge stress when parents can’t afford gifts for the kids. Consider donating a toy or two to one of the many organizations out there.
- Spend some time with the elderly – Nursing homes are full of elderly people who don’t have family to spend the holidays with. I’m sure many of them would love a visitor and you could take the whole family with on a trip to your local nursing home. Chat with the residents, do a project together and show your kids how much a little time and compassion can mean to a person.
- Donate a photo – You heard that right, a super simple way to give back! Share a photo through the free Donate a Photo app and Johnson & Johnson will donate $1 to your choice of one of its trusted non-profit partners.
These are all wonderful ways to give back during the holidays and through the Donate a Photo app, anyone can give effortlessly, without having to reach into tight pockets. It’s super simple and literally takes just a few minutes to download the app and share a photo. Photos can be shared across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to not only help someone out, but to inspire your friends to do so as well. 1.75 million photos have been donated and 179,750 people have contributed since Donate a Photo launched in 2013!
There are many causes to choose from, including Save the Children, which is the one I chose; to give warm blankets to refugee children. Save the Children also has a “Gifts of Joy” holiday catalogue where Johnson & Johnson will match a donation for each item purchased, up to $450,000, as part of their three-year $10 million commitment.
