Each and every day, so many children around us go without things that they need. This has been on my mind a lot lately and I’m trying to do what little I can to help. I don’t have a lot of extra money, so instead I’ve been donating the kids old clothes and toys to places in our community.
I was lucky enough to participate in the Energizer Light Up A Life Champions for Kids Campaign. Right now, Champions for Kids is mobilizing people across the country to put together care kits for children in their communities.
I recently donated a Winter Survival Kit for a child to our local food pantry. My son and I went shopping together for the care kit before his Dr appointment and we both felt great afterwards. It was such fun to shop with him for someone else. It was great to see him joining in and picking stuff that he liked, such as the Scooby Doo bandages in the photo above.
He also thought it was pretty cool to pose for the pictures that I had to take. I might just take him on shops with me more often because nobody else wants to get in the photos!
I was on a quest to find Energizer batteries. I found them throughout the store, but couldn’t find any rechargeable ones. Finally I asked someone and they pointed me towards the photo department. I found three different sets of battery packs with chargers and grabbed one for my care kit.
I found more packs of rechargeable batteries too, so I included those in my kit as well.
After my shopping trip was over, I took everything home and started organizing my “Winter Survival Kit” I included rechargeable Energizer batteries, granola bars, bottled water, a flashlight, bandages, Wet Ones hand wipes, kleenex, gloves and a winter hat. I also included a cute little card.
After I was done putting my care kit together, I took it to our local food pantry. I thought that was a great place to give it because families that can’t afford all the food they need for the month, might not even consider these items for winter survival and may not have them on hand.
I needed to drop off Lil Man’s Dr excuse to his school this afternoon {poor kid has Bronchitis} and stopped at the food pantry on my way. There was one woman working there and I introduced myself, then explained my mission. She seemed a little caught off guard when I handed her a big backpack stuffed full of stuff for winter survival. She thanked me from the bottom of her heart and smiled brightly. She thought the food pantry was the perfect place to donate the care kit to.
Now me on the other hand, my heart just felt full of love. It’s amazing how great it can make you feel to do something nice for another person. This project has empowered me to keep on giving. I want to find things to do for people all over; even if it’s just something simple.
