Getting a new set of living room furniture is always exciting, but what do you do with the furniture you already have? Many people will use their furniture in their living room for years until it is in tatters because they don’t want to add to landfill waste.
But there are many ways that you can use your living room furniture throughout your home to make room for a new, nicer living room furniture set. I’ve shared some great ideas on how to repurpose old furniture below.
How to Repurpose Old Furniture
Family room or game room
If you have a family room or game room with some extra space, put your sofa or loveseat in that room for some added seating. Accent chairs, ottomans, and tables can also be repurposed there. If you don’t have an extra room but don’t use your entire garage, make a chill spot for you and your friends or for your teens and their buddies in the garage.
Study, den, or home office
If you have the space, adding a sofa or loveseat to your work area isn’t a bad idea. It can give you a place to relax and unwind in privacy, letting your home office double as your own personal escape. Curl up to read a book, or lean back and unwind with your spouse, a friend, or a colleague. Accent chairs and recliners are also nice additions.
If you see clients in your home office, consider setting up a small corner for more laid-back interactions with two accent chairs and a small accent table. You can also repurpose ottomans in your home office, and if your ottomans have interior storage that is even more incentive.
Tables and cabinets are versatile
It can be tempting to just get a new set of living room furniture and keep using your coffee tables, accent tables, and accent cabinets. All of these can have uses throughout your home, so there is no need to feel tied to them. Being able to start with a fresh slate gives you more options for your new living room design.
Small accent tables can be useful in any number of places, including the bathroom, in your walk-in closet, at entryways, or anywhere else you have wished you had a place to set something down. Worn accent cabinets and tables can be placed in mudrooms, back entryways, garages, or laundry rooms for additional spots to catch keys, mail, and other random items.
Donate to a thrift store or charity
Many thrift stores accept used furniture so that it can continue to be used by another household before going to a landfill. Many of them will come pick up the furniture for you so that you don’t have to worry about it. You can often schedule it to coincide with your new living room furniture delivery so that you don’t have to be without furniture for more than a few hours.
However, keep in mind that your local thrift store will not accept broken or ruined furniture. If it is too far gone to be used by anyone, hire a junking company that will recycle as much of the furniture as possible.
