Cold treats bring back so many summer nostalgia memories. Snow cones were always such a fun summer treat for me growing up, and now my granddaughter had the opportunity to experience the fun through a homemade snow cone!
Yesterday was a record high temperature day for the year so far, so we spent half of the day on the boat. But before we got the boat in the water, we made homemade snow cones!

This was Layla’s first experience of a snow cone treat, and she sure did love it! She couldn’t get enough of that delicious flavored ice. It was such fun watching her enjoy my favorite summertime frozen treat!
How do you make a homemade snow cone?
Well, I’ll tell you something. A great homemade snow cones definitely starts with the right snow cone or shaved ice machine. There are numerous machines available for all budgets at Hawaiian Shaved Ice. We have the Electric Shaved Ice Machine, and it literally turns the ice into snow – perfect for making snow cones at home.
We got the party package that came with everything that we needed to make snow cones at home – shaved ice machine, snow cone cups, spoon straws, and flavored syrup.
The machine comes with little round molds to freeze water, which work best to create the perfect snow like texture for snow cones. To make the snow cones, you just pop the block of ice into the machine, push down the button, and add your flavor (or flavors) of choice. It’s really quite simple to make your own snow cones with this handy dandy little Hawaiian Shaved Ice Machine!
- Plug in your machine.
- Add the ice block to the machine.
- Put a bowl underneath the machine to catch the shaved ice.
- Press the button on top of the machine, while applying medium pressure.
- Add the shaved ice to a snow cone cup.
- Add your favorite flavor(s) of syrup.
- Enjoy!
Now, people tend to have a lot of questions when it comes to making snow cones at home, so I have helped to answer a few below for you.
Is shaved ice the same as crushed ice?
Technically, shaved ice and crushed ice are different, though both are great for making homemade snow cones. Shaved ice produces a snow like texture, which absorbs the flavoring. Crushed ice creates a crunchier ice texture, and doesn’t absorb the flavoring quite like the shaved ice does.
How do you make snow cones Fluffy?
You can make your snow cones fluffy by using the Electric Shaved Ice Machine like I have. It makes the ice fluffy, just like snow, which is absolutely perfect to absorb the flavored syrup for the best overall taste!
How much syrup do you put in a snow cone?
Believe it or not, you really do not need much syrup at all. About 1.5 ounces should suffice, so you can make quite a few snow cones with just one bottle of flavored syrup.
