What came first muddy buddies or puppy chow?
This is actually a fun one that I did some research on, and according to the people over at Taste, “Puppy Chow” as we know it, got its name because the Ralston Purina Company launched the first Chex cereal (the main ingredient in puppy chow) in in 1937. I’m sure you’ve heard of the Purina pet food brand, and this was actually the same company. World War I soldiers would call their rations “chow” at this time, so the Ralston Purina Company adopted that name for their dog and cat food brands. Since the name “Chex” didn’t seem to stick well, people called it “human chow” because of the Purina connection. Learn some more fun facts on the history of puppy chow over on the Taste site.
