As a kid, I was a typical tomboy – playing with bugs and making mud pies. I was always outside; from sun up to sun down and I couldn’t even tell you how often I had to check in. Of course the world has drastically changed in the last 30 years but the fact of the matter is that many kids just don’t get outside enough.?Statistics show that 54% of moms say their kids spend more time in front of a screen than playing outside. That’s why I’ve partnered with Nature’s Path EnviroKidz today to share all about Ecokeepers, a hands on activity that gets kids out to discover the wonders of nature!
Discover the Wonders of Nature
Forget about catching?fictional Pokemon and get out there with the kids to explore nature?for hidden caches, using your smartphone’s GPS. Ecokeepers blends this treasure hunt with an activity packet for kids to fill out and record their wilderness adventure.
The Ecokeepers Explorer Guide is full of fun activities where?your kids can document different types of animals that they find and play “I spy”. My boys’spotted all different types of birds and a rabbit. They found just about everything on the “I spy” list including a pine cone and mushroom too.
What is geocaching?
Well, it’s fun, exciting and will take you on an adventure. Watch the video below to learn more!
The park that we went to was full of other Geocaches so with GPS in hand, we searched far and wide to find one.
Finally, after a bit of searching, Big Bro found one in between rocks. It was a camouflage container so he almost passed it up!
I’m not gonna lie, we were all pretty excited to open it up and see what was inside! I mean just picture a 30 something mom with 14 and 16 year old boys screaming in the woods about the treasure find. You know you would have laughed if you had seen (or heard) us!
So we opened this geocache up and the original paper was from April of 2014, left by Troop 363! This Geocache had been around for two and half years – awesome! It had a long list of names of the people that had found it along the way as well as a handful of beads.
We signed the book, put the Geocache back and the boys sat on the rock to snack on some EnviroKidz Peanut Free bars.
The boys and I?had such fun and plan to go back to explore the trails of that same park for the other Geocaches on the GPS. We’re going to take a few of the boys’ younger cousins with’so that we can share our love of the great outdoors with them and allow them to discover the wonders of nature.
Ecokeepers?is a?great program to get kids outside exploring the world around them and is completely free for schools and camps! There is an e-version that parents can print and do with their kids on their own too. I highly recommend the Ecokeepers program for groups and families. It’s such a fun and adventurous way to get outside and explore the beauty of nature that surrounds us.
