I still remember going to a friend’s house when I was in middle school and for the better part of an afternoon she taught me how to play chess. I have never forgotten her teaching me the game that always seemed to allude me. In Chess: Be the King! written by Ellisiv Reppen and illustrated by Flu Hartberg kids ages 12+ can learn how to strategize moves and find weaknesses in the other person’s moves to win the game.

Since I am very much an amateur of the game I read this very book for myself and wow…I learned a lot. I wish I had this book back when I was younger! Flu Hartberg is a Norwegian cartoonist and illustrator whose work appears in school textbooks and children’s books, as well as comic books. He currently resides in Oslo, Norway.
