For me the beginning of August is the signal to start getting my oldest ready for school. There is the school supply shopping, clothing shopping and most importantly getting into the right frame of mind for school (that goes for her and for me). We slowly adjust the bedtimes earlier and I remind everyone that we will all be getting up earlier in the mornings. Reading children’s books to get in the back-to-school state of mind is one of my favorite ways to get into the spirit. I have a small box of books just for the occasion and we get to read them all month long. Here are 3 new additions to our collection.

Sadie is ready to start second grade, but her younger sister, Eva, hasn’t even been to kindergarten yet! Sadie knows it’s her duty as big sister to prepare Eva for school. But all this preparation makes Eva nervous?too much homework and no naptime, and how will she ever be able to buy her own lunch at school?
In this adorable follow-up to Eva and Sadie and the Worst Haircut EVER!, Sadie learns that even though she’s a great teacher, it’s okay for Eva not to know everything before she starts school. After all, that’s what kindergarten is for.
As a mom to two girls that are about the same age difference as Sadie and Eva this book was especially touching for me. In Eva and Sadie and the Best Classroom Ever big sister Sadie wants so badly to prepare Eva for kindergarten that she practices everything at home with her. They practice math and reading and even practice waiting in the lunch line to buy lunch. All this preparation makes Eva more nervous than ever! Sadie must remember there was no one to help prep her for kindergarten and it was all fine. The illustrations are extra adorable and it makes me think of my own two girls with every turn of the page. A great book for little ones prepping for their first day of school.
Goose is back in an all-new school adventure! Everyone knows geese don?t go to school. So when Sophie hears flappy footsteps in class, it can?t be Goose, can it? HONK! It is Goose! There’s nothing better than a surprise visit from a friend, especially at school. Reading this heartwarming follow-up to Goose, readers will delight in Sophie and Goose’s next fun-filled adventure.
My youngest really enjoys the book Goose so she really took to Goose Goes to School. Sophie has a pet goose and on her first day of school her mom tells her geese don’t go to school. While at school she thinks she hears him and she was right…he is at school! She hides him from the teacher and all the kids giggle. He even plays with everyone on the playground. Eventually he must wait for Sophie outside till she gets out of school but he is always waiting for her.
Little Critter? learns a special lesson!
When one student gets extra attention from the teacher, Little Critter is not too happy. But when the teacher’s pet is nice to him, he soon discovers that kindness is contagious.
Young readers will love the fun illustrations in Little Critter: Just a Teacher’s Pet, and the simple text will resonate with the littlest of learners.
Every night before bed I have my oldest read one book from her I Can Read! series. They are books meant to be read as first readers for kids. Just a Teacher’s Pet is a Shared My First Reading book so it is meant to be read together and is geared for ages 4-8. Others have levels like 1, 2, etc. on them. We are no strangers to the Little Critter series and this one is perfect for back-to-school reading. In Little Critter’s classroom there is a new student and she seems to be getting to do all the special things that no one else gets to do. What he doesn’t realize is that it is hard being the new kid.
These are great books to get into the school spirit. Heading off to a big new school might be a little less scary when kids realize every kid has to go through it and even their favorite book characters go through it.
