When picking out books for young kids phonics might not be what is on your mind. I never really thought to seek out books to help teach phonics but I should have been! Here are two children’s books that make learning phonics fun!
Written by elementary reading specialist Kevin Bolger, these short, wacky comics are designed to teach beginning readers the five short vowel sounds and will make anyone a fan of phonics. Zany, graphic illustrations from award-winning artist Ben Hodson and carefully controlled text make Gran on a Fan perfect for both beginners just learning to decode and for older or reluctant readers who need a refresher in foundational phonics rules.
They are both small hardback books of extremely nice quality. The illustrations are truly gorgeous with their bright colors and funny scenes. They are written up in comic book style as to make them interesting for young readers and the parents too!
Finally, a phonics primer that’s not un-bear-able! Written by elementary reading specialist Kevin Bolger, Lazy Bear, Crazy Bear is a collection of zany cartoons carefully designed to teach all five long vowel sounds. Bold, graphic illustrations from award-winning artist Ben Hodson and carefully controlled text make Lazy Bear, Crazy Bear perfect for both beginners just learning to decode and for older or reluctant readers who need a refresher in foundational phonics rules.
My 6 year old that is slowly getting better at reading has really taken a liking to these books. I think she is understanding the phonics concepts in them because when I ask her questions she answers back correctly. At the very least she enjoys reading them both out loud to me. These are a simple yet fun read on learning about long and short vowels.? Both are really awesome children’s books that make learning phonics fun!
