There are a ton of children’s books that are released every month and while I agree reading any of them are good for your kids some are just better than others. These 4 children’s books from Sky Pony Press are some recent stand outs and not your everyday average books.
Every evening when it gets dark, a daddy dragon, a mommy dragon, and dragon children breathe fire into the night. But one night, Mommy has trouble making a flame. As she grows sicker, it’s up to Daddy and the dragon children to love and take care of her. When Mommy’s flame goes out completely, Daddy and the dragon children give her one last hug, one last kiss, and find a way to say good-bye. Geert De Kockere’s gentle text and Tineke Van Hemeldonck’s simple yet powerful illustrations tell the true story of An Dom’s death and her family’s coping with their loss. It is a beautiful and emotional story and a must-have book for any family dealing with a parent with terminal illness.
Geert De Kockere, the current editor of
Buitenbeen, a nature magazine for Flanders and the Netherlands, has
written many children’s books. He has won a variety of book prizes for
his work. An Dom was a terminally ill kindergarten teacher who began
writing Dragon Fire so she could explain to her children what the cancer
would do to her and their family. She passed away in 2011. Tineke Van
Hemeldonck studied graphic design, specializing in illustration. This is
her first children’s book.
Dragon Fire by Geert De Kockere and An Dom is illustrated by Tineke Van Hemeldonck. Please note this book is sad and might not be appropriate for all children. This is a beautifully illustrated book and can be an extremely helpful book on the subject of someone close to a child dying. Please do not immediately dismiss this book because of its content. People die everyday and it can be extremely hard, especially on children. A special book like this can really help children connect with the issue of death and their feelings about it. Mommy dragon dies but her family will never forget her.
Crow, Pig, and Beaver are taking a nice stroll in the woods when they come across a red hat sitting in a puddle. Whose hat is it? What mysterious circumstances could have brought it to this very puddle? Can Pig come up with a logical explanation do dispel his friends? hogwash ideas of what happened?
Rune Brandt Bennicke is a celebrated Danish animator with seventeen years of experience in the industry. After working at A-Film in Denmark, he moved to London’s Amblimation Studio and then worked at Walt Disney Studios in Florida. He is now a supervising animator at DreamWorks. Jakob Hjort Jensen, a fellow Danish animator, is a veteran of the animation industry. He has worked for Disney Animation and Imagi Animation. Both are supervising animators at DreamWorks.
The Mystery Hat by Rune Brandt Bennicke and Jakob Hjort Jensen is the cute story of a group of friends trying to decide why there is a hat in a random puddle. Cute illustrations bring the story to life. My girls crack up laughing at the end every single time.

The end is a surprise…and a really great surprise too!
