My son has reached the age where he’s curious about everything. Why is a word I hear most throughout the day and while I may get tired of hearing it, I know he’s just trying to learn about the world around him. Although he’s only 3, he has a serious love of learning and I thought this would be the perfect age to introduce him to the world of science. With the help of The Young Scientists Club and Clifford the Big Red Dog, I was able to to give him his first taste of science in a fun and exciting way.
While some parents may think preschool is too young to start thinking about science, science is all around us and something we should be engaging our children in from a young age all the way through college. Industry leaders have been calling for this type of fun learning activity to help foster children’s natural curiosity about the world around them.
My son loved learning with the Clifford Magic Science kit. We spent a lot of time with the mirror “tricks.” He was simply amazed by the reflections. Seeing how half a circle could become a whole circle with a mirror really was like magic to him. He also thought it was hysterical when I bent the mirrors to show him how his refection changed.
He really enjoyed turning the mirrors into a kaleidoscope; what kid doesn’t enjoy a little glitter?
We both had a lot of fun with the “Ice Cube Magic Trick.” We put some water and an ice cube into the bowl that comes with the kit. With some string and a little bit of salt, we managed to attach the ice cube to the string and pull it out of the water. My son thought this was so cool!
My son’s favorite experiment by far was the “Magic Explosion” one. We put baking soda into a test tube followed by vinegar. He called it a volcano and wanted to do it over and over again.
We had a great time learning and having fun with our Clifford Magic Science kit. There were 14 different experiments in the book to try and there are 6 different Clifford themed science kits to pick from. The Clifford Magic Science kit, as with most of their other kits, comes with a colorful lab tray, measuring cup, and a test tube, as well as other objects used to perform the experiments. If you can’t decide on just one kit to get, there’s a great subscription service available where you can have The Young Scientists Club kits delivered directly to your home 1 or 2 times per month. I think I’m just as excited as my son is to get our next science kit – we both cannot wait to see what else we can learn together.
