As much as I had hoped my son would be a water baby, he’s not. While he will splash around on the pool steps sometimes, he’s just not that into getting into the water. He’s done 2 years of swim lessons, but has yet to do them this year. Needless to say I get very nervous when he’s out around the pool. Although I watch him like a hawk, it’s nice to know I can have a little extra something, like the iSwimBand, to give me added peace of mind.
iSwimBand is the project of 3 fathers after a child drowned in their town. They created iSwimBand for one reason: to make swimming safer.
Sadly, drowning remains a leading cause of accidental death of children. Almost 90% of the them occur with some sort of supervision present.
While neglect can be the cause, these tragedies often occur because drowning is extremely difficult to detect. Unlike how it is portrayed in the media, drowning happens quickly, silently, and often without unusual behavior. Sadly, many victims have drowned while friends, family and caregivers looked on, completely unaware of the tragedy until it was too late.
iSwimBand is the world’s first wearable sensor designed to alert you via your iPhone, iPad, or iTouch if a swimmer has been submerged dangerously long, or if your non-swimmer enters the water.
While nothing replaces diligent human supervision, iSwimBand provides you and your loved ones with an added layer of protection around water.
Setting up the iSwimBand is really easy. You simply tap the censor 5 times and then follow the instructions on the free iSwimBand app to get it set up. Once you enter the censor number, you select either non-swimmer or swimmer. Non-swimmer is automatically set to alert you after the censor has been submerged for 3 seconds, but you can select the time if your child is a swimmer. Warnings will show up in yellow on the screen and an alert will turn the whole screen red and emit a continuous sound.
As Nugget gets more comfortable with the water, I can simply change his status to swimmer and move him from the bracelet to the headband. The battery lasts for hundreds of hours of swim time and the bands are comfortable and don’t pinch or tug on the skin. While some people may think their child will be hesitant to wear the bracelet or headband, my son was eager to wear the bracelet and his 6 year old cousin (who is an avid swimmer) wanted to wear the headband. Kids really like new tech stuff and are very eager to try. There is always someone present when my son is near water, so while the iSwimBand is not a replacement for adult supervision, it’s a great added protection and a must have for any child near water.
