When I was in school, Art, Music and other creative programs were part of the curriculum. These programs allowed children to get their creative juices going and I especially looked forward to Art class every week. I made a lot of really cool projects like paper mache masks, paintings and even a vase for my mom. These programs allowed me to let my creativity shine and I have carried that with me later in life. I love to craft and create DIY projects. I also love to write, which ironically is what supports my family. Without these great programs at my school, I may have never realized my creative potential.
Sadly, times have changed and there aren’t always programs available for some kids. Many schools simply lack the funding for these “extra” programs. it’s really sad though, because I believe that music, art, PE and technology classes are detrimental to our children and their learning process.
The wonderful thing, however is that there are companies like Schoola out there that like to give back and donate money for these important programs. Schoola is an online consignment type store and they’ve pledged to help some schools in need of assistance to their special programs.
I was able to choose the school in which I would like to help and I decided that I wanted to help KIPP Academy fund their music program. KIPP academy is a small school in the Bronx where 95% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. There are more than 1 in every 7 students who also receive services for special education. The music program allows these kids to be reached and engaged with.
For every purchase made through my Schoola tracking code, Schoola will donate $1 to KIPP Academy. They will also donate $1 for every Schoola donation bag request. A really great part of this is that for each bag of clothes that you donate, Schoola will give back $2 of every $5 made to the school that you put on your information form. It’s a total win/win for everyone!
This is definitely a cause that I can get behind. I even filled out a request for a donation bag so that I can help even more. I have a box of the boys old clothes waiting to get dropped off at a donation box by our gas station, but I’m now going to donate it to Schoola instead. This way, I know where the clothes are going and I know that they really will help someone in need!
What things do you do to either give back to your community or to help those in need?
