~I received a copy of Wired by Recess Monkey for review. Opinions and stories are my own.~
I’ve had the pleasure of sharing the past two albums by Recess Monkey over the last year; so I’m really excited to share their recently released album Wired! These guys are one of my son’s favorite all time children’s indie bands and once you listen to their style you’ll see why! Recess Monkey’s incredibly unique, electrifying sound loaded with their witty humorous lyrics only gets better with each track.
Wired is a collection of “gadget rock” songs about inventions, machines, and electricity which intermingle with life unplugged with board games and storytelling. It is the perfect summer album as kids find a balance between their electronics and the world outside. With tracks like “Duct Tape World” and “On a Roll With You” that tell the story about a boy, a girl and a lot of duct tape (an ode to DIY kids) and “Brick by Brick” (an anthem to Legos), Wired embodies the fun of children’s creativity!
My son’s favorite song is “Car Wash”. Every Friday we go to the Car Wash because he absolutely loves watching the vehicles get washed. He was so excited to hear and sing along to the Car Wash song. At the end they get all the kids singing along with them. Recess Monkey certainly knows exactly how to get kids involved and dancing to their music!
There is something deep about many of the songs on Wired. Most of my favorites have to do with children realizing they don’t need batteries or electricity to enjoy things. “Batteries Not Included” is about a boy who just got an amazing toy, but there weren’t any batteries. On his search to locate some, he finds a book and then his bike and eventually forgets all about the toy with the buttons on his quest to go play with his friend.
“Off the Grid” is a sweet song about the electricity going out and for a moment being scared until the feeling of being huddled up with family telling stories and the beauty of the stars takes the fear away.
There’s a lot to love on this album, but if you can catch them live then that’d be a real treat! Recess Monkey will be visiting the locations below. If they come to your area, I highly suggest you make it out with your kids!
