~I received a copy of The Secret Lives of Dorks on DVD for review. Opinions and stories are my own.~
Every summer coming-of-age comedy generally has the same elements and The Secret Lives of Dorks stays true to script with one twist, it is a ‘dork’ romance.
Peyton (Gaelan Connell) is a dork, a comic book geek whose high school career is one hopeless faux pas after another. Yet he’s a dreamer and madly in love with the head cheerleader Carrie (Riley Voelkel), who he is determined to win over. But she is wise to his desperate advances, so to get off his radar she creates a plan to push him into the arms of a dorkette at the school, Samantha (Vanessa Marano). In this high school equation: Peyton wants Carrie; Carrie wants Peyton to hook up with Samantha; Samantha wants Peyton. But even the simplest formula can equal disaster.
Some elements of The Secret Lives of Dorks reminded me of You Can’t Buy Me Love (without the whole “pizza” job aspect). When Carrie, the head cheerleader, decides to create a plan and teach Peyton how to win over Samantha I had a bit of dejavu. However, there is no way Peyton is going to become Mr. Suave and Carrie is going to fall head of heels, everything that happens is just another set up to disaster.
There are the typical cliche’s you see in high-school comedy’s for cliques (the popular kids, the geeks, the dorks, etc.) and although most of them have diversified since my years in high-school, teens still find the stories really funny! The Secret Lives of Dorks is directed by Salom? Breziner and stars up-and-coming actors/actresses such as: Riley Voelkel (The Newsroom, American Horror Story, Glee), Vanessa Marano (Switched at Birth, Scoundrels), Beau Mirchoff (MTV’s Awkward) and Gaelen Connell (Bandslam). There are also supporting roles played by James Belushi, Seymour Cassel and Jennifer Tilly!
