Slugterra: Heroes of the Underground DVD Review

I was asked to review Slugterra: Heroes of the Underground on DVD. You have a cast of characters all done kind of like Anime style. There’s Trixie, the really smart female character that’s the voice of logic. There’s Chord, a blue Juggernaut type creature that talks a bit like a surfer dude. There’s a mole type creature that’s always hungry and kind of a scardy cat that talks a big talk, with a French accent, named Pronto and rounding out the cast is Eli Shane who’s from the surface which most SlugTerrian’s don’t believe exists. Together they form the Shane Gang and are the defenders against evil.

Slugterra is a middle realm between Earth’s surface and the evil that exists further below. They protect the surface from evil by using very special slugs that, when shot from a laser style gun, have special powers. Eveyone loves to duel with their slugs in each episode. The main slug is Burpee and is usually seen riding on Eli’s shoulder. This seemed very Pokemon style to me.

You have your missing, mysterious father with huge shoes to fill angst that shows up in several episodes and is on-going for Eli. The Shane’s leave quite a legacy that Eli feels the need to live up to. It’s a quirky cast of characters and very charming. I did not care for the very first episode but once I watched the second one the story line became much clearer to me. I found the slug’s to be completely adorable and fun to watch when they turned into fighting machines. The artwork is done very well and the scripts were pretty good as well. I think young children would very much enjoy this series. There’s lots of action to hold their attention and the story keeps moving so that it doesn’t get boring. Over all I would recommend this DVD to someone with young boys or girls with a huge sense of adventure. I certainly enjoyed watching it.

There is a bonus feature on how to draw the slugs, which was actually very interesting. I’m a terrible artist and I think that even I could draw them after watching this. There’s also two extra clips on choosing the right slug and getting around in Slugterra. Both were very cute to watch.
